The Writer's Life?

Jun 05, 2018

While this blog hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves, I have been getting a great deal of writing done.

Over at Baeldung I’ve finished four posts in the past two months. There’s a good chance these titles don’t mean anything to you. No worries.

I also finished six posts for HitSubscribe, but only three are live so far. (Yes, the crediting is a little funny for one of these.)

These posts often take a bit of research and planning to put together, but I’ve been able to complete them more quickly of late.

And, because I am not busy enough already, I applied for spot reviewing comics over at Multiversity Comics. So far, I have two mini reviews posted there. (Scroll down for my mini-reviews of Legenderry Red Sonja or Daredevil, respectively.)

Getting this much work done has impacted my schedule, but I can’t overstate the value of dumping Facebook. Dropping over to browse my timeline was a common way to avoid finishing a tough paragraph or solving a difficult edit request. With that option gone, I went through some mild withdrawal and came through it with double my old speed.

Raptitude talks about how dumping social media can help productivity in a new post titled Want More Time? Get Rid of The Easiest Way to Spend It.”  I couldn’t have said it better.

Writing more has also influenced how I think. I’m carrying a journal for the first time in my life. It’s something I’ve resisted for a long time, but it’s helped me with getting my thoughts out onto paper, even if longhand is painful for me. I’ve also set aside my beloved podcasts for reading. In a bizarre manifestation of serendipity, I started A Man in Full the day before Tom Wolfe died. The book made me want to return to fiction.

So I’ve done that too.
